Fortress of Koules

The Koules castle is an impressive fortress that surrounds the harbor of Heraklion, Crete. The 2-storey fortress was constructed in the early 13th century and was used to guard the entry to the port. The structure of the castle is a typical Venetian archtecture. The castle was made of stones - the ground floor has vaulted roof with broad fanlight, the walls were very thick and were divided into 26 apartments. Of the three carvings of the Lions of Saint Mark, only one in the sea side exists. The castle is considered as the trademark of Heraklion town. (Heraklion, Greece / 2010)
