Fortress of Koules

The Koules castle is an impressive fortress that surrounds the harbor of Heraklion, Crete. The 2-storey fortress was constructed in the early 13th century and was used to guard the entry to the port. The structure of the castle is a typical Venetian archtecture. The castle was made of stones - the ground floor has vaulted roof with broad fanlight, the walls were very thick and were divided into 26 apartments. Of the three carvings of the Lions of Saint Mark, only one in the sea side exists. The castle is considered as the trademark of Heraklion town. (Heraklion, Greece / 2010)

Cretaquarium

Cretaquarium (Crete Aquarium) located on the grounds of former American base in Gournes, Crete is a 5000 square meter structure that houses an impressive aquarium with 32 tanks and 50 viewing points. It is a home to almost 2500 organisms of 200 Mediterranean marine species, from the big hunter sharks, to tiny seahorses, to sensational jellyfishes, to lobsters, to different schools of fishes. The aquarium is equipped with modern audio-visual systems and interactive applications. Touch screens and remote controlled cameras are available to visitors for ease and comfort during the visit. Knossos Palace

This ruined palace in Knossos is the largest and most spectacular of all Minoan palatial centres. The structure spreads over 20,000 square meter of lands with height reaching four storeys. It was constructed in a labyrinth-like pattern and it provided housing for thousands of people. Colorful frescoes, figures and paintings on plaster, fills most of the walls. This grander and flamboyant complex was set around a large central court which was also used for public meetings. (Knossos, Greece / 2010)

Agios Minas Church

The Agios Minas church is the Metropolitan church situated at Agia Ekatirini square in Heraklion, Crete. Built during 1862-1895, it is one of the most impressive churches in Greece. It is in the shape of a cross with the dome and four equidistant pillars. The cathedral of the city has a capacity of 8000 people. Dominant of Heraklion wonderful decoration and really unique interior, it is worth a visit. (Heraklion, Greece / 2010)
