Dubbed as "Gibraltar of the East", Monemvasia is a massive walled fortress that was once used for protection, and housed the Byzantine Greeks against barbarians. It is an island and was accessible through a solitary entrance which, many years ago used to be a portable wooden bridge. In 1971, Monemvasia was linked to the rest of outside world through a concrete bridge. Some medieval buildings, defensive structures and Byzantine churches still remain. The church of Hagias Sophia which was built at the end of 12th century is one among restored. (Peloponnese, Greece / 2008).
